Felix the Cat a la Andy Warhol, 1987Acrylic on CanvasI love Felix the Cat and painted this while I was in an art class in high school ... |
Promises, 1987Linoleum Block Print on PaperThis self portrait is carved out of a special kind of linoleum with tools similar to those used by sculptors and leather-workers. A special sort of ink is rolled onto the linoleum which is placed "face down" (pun intended) on the paper. After rubbing with a spoon, the paper is peeled off and allowed to dry. This process is then repeated for each color. The most difficult step is aligning the linoleum on the paper so that the colors line up and the edges are crisp. If I look a bit somber in the portrait, that's because my boyfriend of the moment (I think his name was Warren) had just broken up with me after promising he would never just 'dump' me (hence the title). It's not like I actually believed him but I did miss going out with him. On our first date he took me to a posh steakhouse called Baby Doe's and then to see the movie Aliens, which (unbeknownst to me) he had already seen. Each time the music got really tense and you knew that something was about to jump out -- that's when he'd grab my knee. Every time he did this, I'd let out a blood-curdling scream. Coming just before the scary action on the screen, these outbursts were quite anti-climactic. Needless to say, the folks around us were none too amused (and neither was I at the time, though I do giggle about it now) ... |
