Joyce, 1987 Pencil on Paper Joyce was a character from a Japanese comic series called 'Made in America'. I spent much of my time in Japan drawing -- both as a means of recreation and as a means of communication (as I did not know very much Japanese). My host sister, Chika, was very much 'into' Japanese animation and it rubbed off a bit on me.

Silk Flowers, 1987 Watercolor and Pencil on Paper This is a painting of some silk flowers that my Japanese host mother made and displayed on her coffee table. She had a special workshop for me and another host student to teach us how to make them. The blue mark in the lower left happened when this piece was in a school-wide art show in Plantation, Florida.
