The Kitten, 1987Watercolor on PaperThis is one of the most popular pieces I've done, even though it was also one of the quickest to produce. It is a watercolor that took maybe 20 minutes to paint -- and half of that was just on the eyes! The trick is that the white of the kitten is actually plain paper, all I painted was shadows and background. The color of the shadows is a mixture of yellow and purple, achieving a warm, natural color instead of the cool, stark grey of most paint sets. The composition was based on a charcoal drawing from an art book I got in Japan. I can't read any of the commentary but the "how-to" diagrams are clear in any language. |

Sketches of Nassau, 1988Pencil on PaperThese are some sketches from my 'Senior Trip' cruise to the Bahamas in May of 1988. I did not own a camera, so these sketches are the only physical reminders I have from that trip. The view above is the dock and the view below is the bay. Seeing 'Jack' sketching on the deck of the ship in the movie 'Titanic' reminded me a lot of this trip. |

Self Portrait ("Moody"), 1989Ballpoint on PaperSelf-portraits are by very nature intimate and introspective. And mine always seem to be moody. I don't know if it is the processs of doing a self-portrait that stimulates these emotions or, on the other hand, if the moods stimulate the desire to capture them on paper. For comparison, check out the other two self-portraits: Promises (1986) and You-Down (1994). |
